Of Molly and Madeleine

And one or two other characters.*

Molly (unlike Malc's Molly) was a bit distracted. Like Tolkien, another owl we met earlier, she just couldn't quite get on with the business of flying to order. She flitted without warning and had a great deal of chirrupy stuff to say and spent most of her time listening to something behind her. Apparently she comes from an Arctic waste and is accustomed to tracking weasels as they burrow along, two feet under the snow. What she makes of her admirers is hard to imagine. All that clicking and those big, single eyes staring at her. Impossible not to love her though!

Madeleine (the Secretary bird) was a different kettle. Of snakes.
She seemed quite amusing and daintily affected - until she demonstrated her talent for kicking a defenceless rubber snake to death. Later, when us photographers got our private viewing, she had a quick go at her falconer too - not he first time, he's been in hospital after she cut his head open! No, not my favourite bird. Still, the make-up and the trousers are good though the eyelashes surely had to be false :)

*I was going to show you Tolkien and maybe the Harris Hawk or possibly Chestnut, the Tawny Owl. They were all so beautiful (except the vultures who were funny and alarming by turns). but blogger's gone boggy on me so I'll go to bed instead.

Sleep well all. I hope the sun shines for you tomorrow.

HEYYYYYY!

k......one must remember we have Thammy the Thnake as a family pet..no kicking of Thammy is allowed!!
Wow...what an odd and dangerous bird.
I wonder how it got decided she's a 'secretary' bird?
Oh boy.....could I have fun with that one...LOL

But the wowl.....ohmygosh....what an awesome birdie.
Great view on the stump...but I'da freaked out to have him on the back of my bench, in my face.

(watched The Birds and has a fear of having her eyes pecked out....LOL.....childhood latenight television trauma, don'tchaknow!)

Get rested and just make some time for 'being', will ya?!

It was beautiful Betty but relaxing - not exactly, more challenging, demanding and exciting. Some of these birds are fast. Madeleine for instance despatched her rubber snake in seconds and when Molly flew, it seemed like a silent flowing glide but the speed was amazing.

I really didn't take to Madeleine Mel. She was just too jumpy and snappy and kicky! Apparently when secretary birds were first discovered by the West, secretaries (real ones) were all men wearing black breeches, white socks and black jackets with tails. Thus the name! I don't think they made a habit of killing snakes though :)
(I'm quite impressed with my presence of mind at the sudden very near presence of Molly :)

Oh and the male secretaries had quill pens stuck in their hats! Like Madeleine's feathers :)

Now all we need is for ISLTV to discover for us the origins of secretaries and we'll have a whole story! (cos she's very good at that sort of thing :)

I have to say, Madeleine was my favourite, very closely followed by Molly. I think I may in fact have one of Molly's feathers somewhere :)

Madeleine certainly had attitude Thursday :) But Molly had charm. And fluff! And a headscarf :)

I'm impressed at that explanation and eagerly await the other half by ILTV!

And I'm impressed you maintained your presence of mind with that birdie in your space too--though I'll have to agree.....Molly wins, hands down.

Madeleine....scares me.....LOL

If Madeleine had landed in my space you wouldn't have seen me for dust Mel :)

No pressure I, it's just a whim :)

(But you do do that sort of thing rather well :)
