lamp post

This pic suddenly reminds me. One summer afternoon, we were all out on the front lawn having BBQ'd and drunk lots. Barney suddenly decided it was time to do some dog training.
I have observed over the years that slightly drunken people become quite convinced that dogs can understand their every word. We'd had some success training Nut to fetch...as long as it was done in the dining room with his tuggy toy. He doesn''t understand the game if it's done anywhere else or with anything else.
So it went like this:-
Barney (throwing stick over near lamp post, un-noticed by dog) "fetch!!"
Nut (shuffling around by left over food) "yes?"
Barney "fetch, nutmeg, over there, go and get the stick"
Nut "snuffle" (bright eyed expectant look)
Barney "go on stupid dog. Go and get the stick...by the lamp post. fetch" (pointing )
Nut (running round in small circle, veering off towards car and returning by left over food) "get a prize now? Food?"
Barney (pointing some more) " fetch. It's by the lamp post. go and get it. Lamp post"
Nut (circles lamp post and returns panting and happy)" yep. I did it"
Barney (in stentorian tones, pointing) "BY THE LAMP POST!!!!"
Nut (ears drooping a trifle) "...?"
Barney (still louder and pointing with emphasis) "LAMP POST! LAMP POST...no no (as Nutmeg heads back towards him) yess there (as Nutmeg heads back to the lampost)No (as Nutmeg circles lamp post and heads back to Barney) NOOO! LAMP POST, LAMP POST!!!"
Passing neigbour, later to wife, "I always said they're mad at no.1. They call their dog Lamp post!"
